Bicycle Helmets To Be Given Away At Renegade Harley- Davidson In Alexandria Along With Rollover Simulator Demonstrations

Louisiana State Police Troop E will be distributing free bicycle helmets at Renegade Harley-Davidson (2030 North Mall Drive, Alexandria) on Saturday, May 17, 2008 beginning at 10:00 am. We will also demonstrate the Louisiana State Police Rollover Simulator in an effort to educate the public on the issue of seatbelt safety. These events will allow us to supply children (5 yrs – 14 yrs) with helmets and bicycle safety information and adults and children with seatbelt safety information.

Studies show that up to 85% of serious head injuries sustained in bike crashes could have been prevented by the proper wearing of a bicycle helmet. The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development Safe Routes to School Program are funding the Louisiana State Police to provide this training to our school age children. This partnership will allow us to distribute 9,000 bicycle helmets statewide and the associated educational materials to go with it. The overall objective of the program is to educate children in the safe way to ride their bikes to school. This is a great opportunity to promote healthy, active lifestyles.

This day will be fun, but more importantly, it may save a child or adult’s life.

Troop E has currently worked 15 fatal crashes for the year of 2008. Sixty-seven percent (67%) of these fatalities have involved unrestrained motorists/occupants. Help us reduce this percentage by attending this event and becoming more aware of the importance of wearing your seatbelt.
