| LOUISIANA STATE POLICE COURTESY LOYALTY SERVICE News Release Date: January 13, 2008 Pedestrian Dies In Vernon Parish Crash On Saturday, January 12, 2008, at 8:35 pm, Louisiana State Police Troop E responded to a fatal crash involving one vehicle and one pedestrian. The crash occurred on LA Hwy 28, milepost 8.8, in Vernon Parish. The crash involved a 1996 Jeep, driven by Mr. Clifford P. Connella (W/M 47 yrs) of Deville, LA and a pedestrian identified as Mr. Eugene Oneal Free (W/M 43 yrs) of Leesville, LA. The Jeep was east bound on LA Hwy 28 when Mr. Connella observed the pedestrian lying prone in the roadway. Mr. Connella attempted to avoid contact with Mr. Free by swerving across the centerline, but was unsuccessful. Prior to the crash Mr. Free and his girlfriend were in a domestic dispute. Mr. Free left a nearby residence and walked into the roadway. He is suspected of being intoxicated prior to the crash. The Vernon Parish Coroner’s Office pronounced Mr. Free dead at the scene. Mr. Connella was not injured in the crash. Routine toxicology tests are pending. Vernon Parish Coroner’s Office will conduct an investigation to determine the exact cause of death. Troop E Troopers have investigated a total of 1 fatal crash for the year of 2008, resulting in 1 fatality.
