| LOUISIANA STATE POLICE COURTESY LOYALTY SERVICE News Release Date: February 20, 2008 Alcohol A Primary Factor In Vernon Parish Fatality On Wednesday, February 20, 2008, at 3:50 am, Louisiana State Police Troop E responded to a fatal crash involving one vehicle. The crash occurred on Dido Loop Road east of LA Hwy 113 (Pitkin Community). This area is located in Vernon Parish. The crash involved a 2000 Plymouth Voyager, driven by Mr. Allen Lee Smith Jr. (W/M 27 yrs) of Pitkin, LA. The Plymouth was east bound on Dido Loop Road when the vehicle exited the roadway to the right. After the vehicle exited the roadway it collided with a ditch and overturned several times. The only passenger in the vehicle, Ms. Melody L. Larkin (W/F 32 yrs) of Pitkin, LA, was killed upon impact. She was not wearing her seatbelt. Vernon Parish Coroner’s Office will conduct an investigation to determine the exact cause of death. Mr. Smith Jr. received minor injuries as a result of this collision. He was impaired with alcohol and charged with DWI 1st, Vehicular Homicide, Careless Operation, and No Seatbelt. Mr. Smith Jr. was booked into the Vernon Parish Sheriff’s Office. Troop E Troopers have investigated a total of 6 fatal crashes for the year of 2008, resulting in 6 fatalities. Two of the six fatalities have involved pedestrians. The other four fatal crashes (vehicle only) have involved unrestrained motorist/occupants (100% of fatalities unrestrained).
