Woman Leads Trooper On High Speed Pursuit

On Monday, February 25, 2008, at 11:12 am, Louisiana State Police Troop E Trooper First Class Shawn Owens was on patrol in Natchitoches Parish. TFC Owens was north bound on LA Hwy 1 at approximately milepost 316 when he visually observed a south bound vehicle (black 1996 Infiniti J30) traveling at a high rate of speed. He activated his radar which indicated a speed of 86 mph. Note: This area of LA Hwy 1 is a 55 mph zone.

TFC Owens immediately positioned his patrol vehicle (marked Louisiana State Police unit) behind the Infiniti and attempted to stop the driver. Owens had activated his blue lights and siren while making this attempt, but the driver refused to stop. The driver continued south bound on LA Hwy 1, at a high rate of speed, swerving into the north bound lane. The pursuit covered approximately five miles until the vehicle became disabled (engine malfunctioned) at the intersection of LA Hwy 1 at LA Hwy 493. This malfunction allowed Owens to take the driver into custody.

The driver was identified as Ms. Karen D. Cross (B/F 25 yrs) of Baton Rouge, LA. After taking Ms. Cross into custody TFC Owens observed three small children in the vehicle. The ages of the children ranged from 1-4 years old.

Ms. Cross was booked into the Natchitoches Parish Detention Center and charged with Aggravated Flight from an Officer, Speeding, and No Child Restraint.

The children were released to the Department of Social Services.
