Edmonson, Superintendent News Release Date: July 7, 2008 Fatality Crash In Avoyelles Parish On Monday, July 07, 2008, at 6:29 am, Louisiana State Police Troop E responded to a fatal crash involving two vehicles. The crash occurred on LA Hwy 1179, milepost 1.8, in Avoyelles Parish. The crash involved a 1990 Chevrolet Prism, driven by Mr. Ryan Prater (B/M 16 yrs) of Cottonport, LA and a 1994 Ford pickup, driven by Mr. Ronald W. Coulon Jr. (W/M 24 yrs) of Cottonport, LA. The Chevrolet was south bound on LA Hwy 1179 and the Ford was north bound on LA Hwy 1179. Mr. Prater lost control of his vehicle and exited the right side of the roadway. After exiting the roadway, Mr. Prater overcorrected his vehicle and reentered LA Hwy 1179. This action caused the Chevrolet to enter the north bound lane and collide with the Ford. Mr. Prater was ejected from his vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene. He was not wearing a seatbelt. Mr. Coulon Jr. was wearing his seatbelt and was not injured. Routine toxicology tests are pending. Avoyelles Parish Coroner’s Office will conduct an investigation to determine the exact cause of death. Troop E Troopers have investigated 33 fatal crashes for the year of 2008, resulting in 37 fatalities. Six of the 33 fatal crashes have involved pedestrians. Four fatal crashes have involved an ATV and two have involved a motorcycle. Sixteen of the 21 fatal crashes (passenger vehicles only) have involved unrestrained motorists/occupants. Six fatal victims were restrained.
