Edmonson, Superintendent News Release Date: May 18, 2008 Impaired Driver Kills Center Point Lady On Sunday, May 18, 2008, at 2:51 pm, Louisiana State Police Troop E responded to a fatal crash involving two vehicles. The crash occurred on US 171 at LA Hwy 8 in Vernon Parish. The crash involved a 1985 Nissan pickup, driven by Mr. Willie G. Trotti (W/M 60 yrs) of Many, LA and a 1998 Mazda Protégé, driven by Ms. Martha B. O’Neal (W/F 62 yrs) of Center Point, LA. The Nissan was north bound on US 171 at LA Hwy 8 when Mr. Trotti failed to stop at a red light. The Mazda was entering US 171, from LA Hwy 8, when the Nissan collided with it. Both vehicles came to rest in this intersection. Mr. Trotti received moderate injuries and was transported to Byrd Regional Medical Center for treatment of his injuries. Ms. O’Neal was pronounced dead at the scene. The only passenger in Ms. O’Neal’s vehicle, Mr. Phillip L. O’Neal (63 yrs) of Center Point, LA, received moderate injuries and was transported to Byrd Regional Medical Center. Impairment is suspected on behalf of Mr. Trotti. He was charged with DWI 3rd, Vehicular Homicide, 1st Degree Vehicular Negligent Injuring, Failure to Obey a Red Light, and Driving Under Suspension. Routine toxicology tests are pending. Vernon Parish Coroner’s Office will conduct an investigation to determine the exact cause of death. Troop E Troopers have investigated 18 fatal crashes for the year of 2008, resulting in 18 fatalities. Three of the 18 fatalities have involved pedestrians. One fatal crash involved an ATV. Nine of the 14 fatal crashes (vehicle only) have involved unrestrained motorists/occupants. Seatbelt use is unknown in one fatal crash. Four fatal victims were restrained.
