Troop E’s Results of the “Click it or Ticket” Campaign

The nationwide “Click it or Ticket” campaign ran from May 19, 2008 through June 1, 2008. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) 68 percent of those killed at night were not restrained and 57 percent of those killed during the day were not restrained (2006). The objective of this campaign was to aggressively enforce the state’s seatbelt and child restraint law. Louisiana law requires the driver and front seat passengers to wear a seatbelt correctly at all times. Children under the age of thirteen must be restrained with a seatbelt and/or appropriate child restraint regardless of seating position.

During this campaign, Louisiana State Police Troop E issued 991 seatbelt citations. Despite the fact that this campaign is over, Troop E Troopers will continue to aggressively enforce the state’s seatbelt and child restraint laws.

Troop E Troopers have investigated 21 fatal crashes for the year of 2008, resulting in 21 fatalities. Three of the 21 fatalities have involved pedestrians. Two fatal crashes have involved an ATV and two have involved a motorcycle. Nine of the 14 (64%) fatal crashes (passenger vehicles only) have involved unrestrained motorists/occupants. Seatbelt use is unknown in one fatal crash. Four fatal victims were restrained.

According to the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission, seatbelts reduce the risk of fatal injury to passenger car occupants by 45 percent and the risk of moderate to critical injury by 50 percent. In 2007, 65 percent of the 985 people killed in vehicle crashes in Louisiana were not buckled up. Failure to wear a seatbelt contributes to more traffic related fatalities than any other single traffic related behavior.
