Edmonson, Superintendent News Release Date: June 6, 2008 Impaired Driver Kills Two Children; Children Riding An ATV On Roadway On Thursday, June 5, 2008, at 8:10 pm, Louisiana State Police Troop E responded to a fatal crash involving a passenger vehicle and an ATV. The crash occurred on Kepler Road in Rapides Parish. This location is in Glenmora, LA. The crash involved a 1999 GMC pickup, driven by Mr. Kasey Lynn Myers (W/M 18 yrs) of Oakdale, LA and a 2007 Honda TRX 250 (four-wheeler), driven by Mr. Joel Lawrence (W/M 7 yrs) of Glenmora, LA. The GMC was east bound on Kepler Road and the ATV was in the west bound lane of Kepler Road attempting to reenter an open field. As the ATV was attempting to reenter the field, the GMC crossed into the west bound lane and collided with it. Mr. Lawrence and his passenger, Mr. Braden Johnson (7 yrs) of Glenmora, LA, were ejected from the ATV. Neither Mr. Myers nor his juvenile passenger was injured. Mr. Lawrence and Mr. Johnson were both pronounced dead at the scene. Rapides Parish Coroner’s Office will conduct an investigation to determine the exact cause of death. Mr. Myers is suspected of driving while impaired. He was charged with DWI 1st, Negligent Homicide (two counts), Driving Left of Center, and Open Container. He was booked into the Rapides Parish Jail. Troop E Troopers have investigated 23 fatal crashes for the year of 2008, resulting in 25 fatalities. Three of the 23 fatal crashes have involved pedestrians. Three fatal crashes have involved an ATV and two have involved a motorcycle. Ten of the 15 fatal crashes (passenger vehicles only) have involved unrestrained motorists/occupants. Seatbelt use is unknown in one fatal crash.
