Rapides Parish Fatal Crash

Late yesterday afternoon, a single vehicle crash killed one person and injured four others.

Troopers responded to the crash around 5:00 pm, which occurred on Denny Road, off of LA Hwy 1205. The crash involved a 2000 Ford F-150, driven by a juvenile (W/F 15 yrs) of Pineville, LA. The Ford was east bound on Denny Road when the juvenile lost control and exited the right side of the roadway. After exiting the roadway, the driver overcorrected her error, reentered the roadway, and exited the left side before colliding with a tree.

The juvenile driver was wearing her seatbelt and received moderate injuries. She was transported to Rapides General Hospital for treatment. Jessica A. Otwell (W/F 19 yrs), Susaune Vailes (W/F 35 yrs), and two other juveniles (W/F 13 yrs and W/M 13 yrs), all of Pineville, LA, were passengers at the time of the crash. Otwell was initially transported to Rapides General Hospital with serious injuries, but was later pronounced dead. It is unknown if she was wearing a seatbelt. Vailes and the other juvenile female received moderate injuries and were properly restrained. Vailes was transported to Cabrini Hospital and the juvenile was transported to Rapides General Hospital. The juvenile male received minor injuries, but refused medical aid.

The crash remains under investigation. Routine toxicology tests and charges are pending.

Troop E Troopers have investigated 69 fatal crashes for the year of 2009, resulting in 83 fatalities. Forty-three of the 57 fatal crashes (passenger vehicles only) have involved unrestrained motorists/occupants. It is unknown if the deceased were wearing a seatbelt in two crashes. Six crashes have involved a motorcycle, three have involved a pedestrian, and two have involved an off road vehicle.
