| LOUISIANA STATE POLICE COURTESY LOYALTY SERVICE Colonel Michael D. Edmonson, Superintendent News Release Date: April 15, 2010 Same Highway, Another Fatal Crash Earlier today, a single vehicle crash killed another Natchitoches man. This crash occurred approximately twelve hours after a previous fatal crash, where a seventeen-year- old was killed, approximately one mile away. Troopers responded to the crash around 2:15 pm, which occurred on LA Hwy 494, milepost 19, in Natchitoches Parish. The crash involved a 1995 Plymouth Neon, driven by Billy Joe Elliott (W/M 29 yrs). The Plymouth was east bound on LA Hwy 494, at a high rate of speed, when Elliott lost control and exited the right side of the roadway. After exiting the right side, Elliott overcorrected his vehicle, reentered LA Hwy 494, and exited the left side before overturning several times. Elliott was not wearing his seatbelt and was ejected during the crash. Elliott was pronounced dead. Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation. Every driver upon the roadway should ensure that he/she is properly restrained and that every passenger in his/her vehicle is properly restrained. Lack of seatbelt usage is still the leading cause of fatalities in motor vehicle crashes. While not all crashes are survivable, seatbelts can greatly decrease the occupant’s chance of death and will greatly reduce the extent of injury. **Lack of seatbelt usage remains a common denominator in the majority of fatal crashes worked by Troopers at Troop E. Troop E Troopers have investigated 22 fatal crashes for the year of 2010, resulting in 24 fatalities.
