Edmonson, Superintendent News Release Date: April 1, 2009 Vernon Parish Crash Kills One Driver and Seriously Injures a Passenger A two vehicle crash in Vernon Parish has killed one of the drivers and seriously injured a passenger. Louisiana State Police Troop E Troopers investigated the crash on Tuesday, March 31, 2009 at about 10:28 pm on US 171 (milepost 49.8) in Vernon Parish. A 2005 Chevrolet Impala was traveling west on Catfish Hut Rd when the driver failed to yield at US 171 and pulled into the path of a northbound 2004 Chevrolet truck. The truck struck the Impala on its driver's side. The driver of the Impala, identified as 78 year old Viola Serigne from Deridder, died as a result of injuries she sustained in the crash. Her passenger, identified as 73 year old Anthony Serigne from Deridder, was seriously injured in the crash and was transported to Lake Charles Memorial Hospital. The driver of the Chevrolet truck, identified as 36 year old Jeffery Gilmer from Bossier City, was not injured in the crash. It appears that both drivers and the passenger were wearing their seat belts at the time of the crash. Alcohol use is not suspected to be a factor, but routine toxicology tests are pending. Troop E Troopers have investigated 14 fatal crashes for the year of 2009, resulting in 16 fatalities. Eight of the 10 fatal crashes (passenger vehicles only) have involved unrestrained motorists/occupants. Two crashes have involved a motorcycle and one has involved a pedestrian.
