Edmonson, Superintendent News Release Date: July 7, 2009 Vernon Parish Fatal Crash Early this morning, a single vehicle crash claimed the life of a teenager from Merryville, LA. The crash was not discovered until approximately 6:30 pm due, in part, to the location. The crash is believed to have occurred at approximately 5:00 am. The crash occurred on Cottonwood Road approximately a half mile north of Hawk’s Road and five miles east of LA Hwy 464. The crash involved a 1997 Ford ASP, driven by Mark Anthony Brister (W/M 19 yrs). The Ford was north bound on Cottonwood Road when Brister lost control and exited the left side of the roadway. After exiting the roadway, the vehicle collided with an embankment and began overturning. Brister was not wearing his seatbelt and was ejected. He was pronounced dead. The crash remains under investigation. Troop E Troopers have investigated 39 fatal crashes for the year of 2009, resulting in 47 fatalities. Twenty-two of the 31 fatal crashes (passenger vehicles only) have involved unrestrained motorists/occupants. Two crashes have involved a motorcycle, three have involved a pedestrian, and two have involved an off road vehicle. Seatbelt use is unknown in one fatal crash.
