Edmonson, Superintendent News Release Date: May 29, 2009 Alcohol Suspected In Fatal Natchitoches Parish Crash Early this morning Louisiana State Police responded to the fifth fatal crash this month in Natchitoches Parish alone. Troopers responded to the crash around 3:00 am, which occurred on US Hwy 71 approximately four miles south of Clarence, LA. The crash involved a 1984 Chevrolet Caprice, driven by Terry N. Sawyer (B/M 28 yrs) of Natchitoches, LA. The Chevrolet was south bound on US Hwy 71 when Sawyer lost control and exited the right side of the roadway. After exiting the roadway, the vehicle collided with a culvert and a utility pole before overturning, coming to rest on its roof. Sawyer received moderate injuries and was transported to Natchitoches Parish Hospital. His only two passengers in the vehicle at the time of the crash are identified as Dee W. Evans (28 yrs) of Natchitoches, LA and Alvin Carpenter (33 yrs) of Winnfield, LA. Evans received moderate injuries and was transported to LSU Medical Center in Shreveport, LA for treatment. Carpenter was wearing his seatbelt; however, he was pronounced dead at the scene. Sawyer was charged with DWI (1st offense), Vehicular Homicide, Vehicular Negligent Injuring, and Careless Operation. Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation. Troop E Troopers have investigated 29 fatal crashes for the year of 2009, resulting in 33 fatalities. Sixteen of the 23 fatal crashes (passenger vehicles only) have involved unrestrained motorists/occupants. Two crashes have involved a motorcycle, three have involved a pedestrian, and one has involved an off road vehicle.
