Natchitoches Parish Crash Kills Robeline Man

A vehicle that was operated in a careless manner crashed earlier today and has claimed the life of a Robeline man.

Troopers responded to the crash around 12:20 pm, which occurred on LA Hwy 6 near LA Hwy 485. The crash involved a 1997 Jeep Cherokee, driven by Paul Kay (W/M 56 yrs) of Robeline, LA. The Jeep was west bound on LA Hwy 6 when Kay entered the east bound lane in an attempt to pass four vehicles in a no passing zone. After passing three of the four vehicles, he attempted to merge back into the west bound lane between the third and fourth vehicles. Kay was traveling too fast and there was not enough space between the vehicles for this action to be performed safely. He then abruptly reentered the east bound lane causing him to lose control. The Jeep then began overturning in the roadway and exited the left side coming to rest in the east bound ditch.

Kay was not wearing his seatbelt and was ejected. He was transported to Natchitoches Parish Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation.

Troop E Troopers have investigated 27 fatal crashes for the year of 2009, resulting in 31 fatalities. Fifteen of the 21 fatal crashes (passenger vehicles only) have involved unrestrained motorists/occupants. Two crashes have involved a motorcycle, three have involved a pedestrian, and one has involved an off road vehicle.
