Edmonson, Superintendent News Release Date: May 16, 2009 Crash In Rapides Parish Kills One And Critically Injures Another A single vehicle crash early this morning has claimed the life of one young man and critically injured another young man. Troopers responded to the crash around 7:00 am, which occurred on LA Hwy 3170 approximately two miles east of US Hwy 71 at the Chatelain Lake Canal. The crash involved a 2002 Dodge pickup, driven by James Carroll Laird III (W/M 19 yrs) of Denham Springs, LA. The Dodge was west bound on LA Hwy 3170 when Laird lost control and exited the right side of the roadway. After exiting the roadway, the vehicle collided with a metal bridge railing, became airborne, and then collided with the canal embankment. Laird was not wearing his seatbelt and was pronounced dead. His only passenger, Jarred B. Brown (19 yrs) of Denham Springs, LA, was not wearing his seatbelt and received critical injuries. Brown was transported to Cabrini Hospital for treatment. Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation. Troop E Troopers have investigated 26 fatal crashes for the year of 2009, resulting in 28 fatalities. Fourteen of the 20 fatal crashes (passenger vehicles only) have involved unrestrained motorists/occupants. Two crashes have involved a motorcycle, three have involved a pedestrian, and one has involved an off road vehicle.
