| LOUISIANA STATE POLICE COURTESY LOYALTY SERVICE Colonel Michael D. Edmonson, Superintendent News Release Date: May 8, 2009 Three Vehicles Involved In Fatal Crash On I-49 A crash involving two 18-wheelers and a heavy-duty wrecker has left one man dead and another injured. The crash occurred early this morning in Natchitoches Parish. Troopers responded to the crash around 1:30 am, which occurred on I-49 near Posey Road. The crash involved a 2006 Peterbilt (18-wheeler), driven by Jason A. Vanzile (W/M 26 yrs) of Bell, FL, a 2007 Mack (18-wheeler) which was unoccupied at the time of the crash, and a 1999 Peterbilt (wrecker) which was also unoccupied at the time of the crash. Prior to the crash, the Mack was disabled on the north bound shoulder of I-49 and the wrecker was attempting to recover it. As the 2006 Peterbilt approached both vehicles from the rear Vanzile lost control and collided with the rear of the Mack. This collision forced the Mack into the wrecker and subsequently pinned the wrecker’s operator, Donnie L. Roshong (W/M 47 yrs) of Leesville, LA, between the wrecker and a guardrail. The 2006 Peterbilt came to rest in the north bound left lane of I-49 with the vehicle in an upright position and the trailer on its side. All three vehicles became engulfed in flames after the collision. Vanzile received moderate injuries and was transported to Natchitoches Parish Hospital for treatment. Roshong was pronounced dead at the scene. Vanzile’s trailer was loaded with approximately 150 cattle. Approximately 100 of them survived. I-49 north bound lanes were reopened at 4:45 pm. Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation. Troop E Troopers have investigated 22 fatal crashes for the year of 2009, resulting in 24 fatalities. Twelve of the 17 fatal crashes (passenger vehicles only) have involved unrestrained motorists/occupants. Two crashes have involved a motorcycle and three have involved a pedestrian.
