Seatbelt Not Used In Another Fatal Crash

Earlier today, a crash involving two vehicles killed a man from Lecompte, LA.

Troopers responded to the crash around 9:15 am, which occurred on US Hwy 71 south of Alexandria in Rapides Parish. The crash involved a 1994 Chevrolet pickup, driven by Charles L. Lyons (B/M 68 yrs) and a 2003 Freightliner, driven by Anthony A. Sarpy (O/M 34 yrs) of Alexandria, LA. The Freightliner was south bound on US Hwy 71 traveling at a slow speed in the outside lane, escorting a piece of equipment. The Chevrolet was also south bound on US Hwy 71, directly behind the Freightliner, when Lyons collided with the rear section of Sarpy’s vehicle.

Lyons was not wearing his seatbelt and was pronounced dead.

Sarpy was wearing his seatbelt and was not injured. Celotha Loyd Jr. (32 yrs) of Alexandria, LA, David Sabbath (29 yrs) of Shreveport, LA, Adam McGehee (27 yrs) of Alexandria, LA, and Larry Mosley of Alexandria, LA, were passengers in Sarpy’s vehicle. All the passengers were wearing their seatbelts and were not injured.

The crash remains under investigation. Routine toxicology tests are pending.

Troop E Troopers have investigated 65 fatal crashes for the year of 2009, resulting in 78 fatalities. Forty-one of the 54 fatal crashes (passenger vehicles only) have involved unrestrained motorists/occupants. It is unknown if the deceased was wearing a seatbelt in one crash. Six crashes have involved a motorcycle, three have involved a pedestrian, and two have involved an off road vehicle.
