Edmonson, Superintendent News Release Date: October 4, 2009 Rapides Parish Fatal Crash Earlier today, a single vehicle crash killed an Alexandria woman and injured five others. Troopers responded to the crash around 11:35 am, which occurred on LA Hwy 1 north of LA Hwy 3170. The crash involved a 2004 Chevrolet SUV, driven by Kathey N. Vercher (B/F 25 yrs). The Chevrolet was south bound on LA Hwy 1 when Vercher lost control and exited the left side of the roadway. After exiting the roadway, the vehicle entered a deep ditch and overturned. Vercher was wearing her seatbelt, but was pronounced dead. There were five additional occupants (two adults and three juveniles) in the vehicle. Jene Coney (59 yrs), of Alexandria, suffered moderate injuries and was transported to Rapides Regional Hospital. Denise Drummer (31 yrs), of Alexandria, suffered minor injuries and was transported to Rapides Regional Hospital. All three juveniles suffered minor injuries and were transported to Rapides Regional Hospital as well. The crash remains under investigation. Routine toxicology tests are pending. Troop E Troopers have investigated 54 fatal crashes for the year of 2009, resulting in 63 fatalities. Thirty-three of the 44 fatal crashes (passenger vehicles only) have involved unrestrained motorists/occupants. Five crashes have involved a motorcycle, three have involved a pedestrian, and two have involved an off road vehicle.
