Edmonson, Superintendent News Release Date: November 2, 2009 Three Die In Vernon Parish Crash Last night, a single vehicle crash claimed the life of three men. Troopers responded to the crash around 9:00 pm, which occurred on LA Hwy 465 east of LA Hwy 117. The crash involved a 2006 Nissan Xterra, driven by Hullett E. Sumlin (W/M 67 yrs) of Leesville, LA. The Nissan was south bound on LA Hwy 465 when Sumlin lost control and exited the right side of the roadway. After exiting the roadway, the vehicle collided with a large tree. Sumlin and his only two passengers were pronounced dead. His passengers are identified as James E. Walling (46 yrs) of Beaumont, TX and Richard L. Walling (41 yrs) of Humble, TX. The crash remains under investigation. Routine toxicology tests are pending. Troop E Troopers have investigated 61 fatal crashes for the year of 2009, resulting in 74 fatalities. Thirty-nine of the 51 fatal crashes (passenger vehicles only) have involved unrestrained motorists/occupants. It is unknown if the deceased was wearing a seatbelt in one crash. Five crashes have involved a motorcycle, three have involved a pedestrian, and two have involved an off road vehicle.
