Edmonson, Superintendent News Release Date: November 7, 2009 Rapides Parish Fatal Crash Earlier today, a crash involving one vehicle killed one man and injured another. Troopers responded to the crash around 3:15 pm, which occurred on West River Road east of LA Hwy 112. The crash involved a 2010 Chevrolet Camaro, driven by Marty Mayo Peoples (W/M 43 yrs) of Oakdale, LA. The Chevrolet was east bound on West River Road when Peoples lost control and exited the left side of the roadway. After exiting the roadway, the vehicle collided with two trees before reentering the roadway and overturning. The vehicle continued overturning and exited the right side of the roadway before coming to rest on the driver’s side. Peoples was wearing his seatbelt, but was pronounced dead at the scene. His only passenger, identified as Rickie E. Monk (W/M 47 yrs) of Leesville, LA, was wearing his seatbelt and received moderate injuries. He was transported to Rapides General Hospital for treatment. Excessive speed is suspected as a primary factor. The crash remains under investigation. Routine toxicology tests are pending. Troop E Troopers have investigated 62 fatal crashes for the year of 2009, resulting in 75 fatalities. Thirty-nine of the 52 fatal crashes (passenger vehicles only) have involved unrestrained motorists/occupants. It is unknown if the deceased was wearing a seatbelt in one crash. Five crashes have involved a motorcycle, three have involved a pedestrian, and two have involved an off road vehicle.
