Edmonson, Superintendent News Release Date: September 16, 2009 Rapides Parish Fatal Crash Yesterday evening, a single vehicle crash killed one person and injured another. Troopers responded to the crash around 6:00 pm, which occurred on LA 488 approximately six miles east of LA Hwy 112. The crash involved a 2008 Ford pickup, driven by Jason L. Crager (W/M 23 yrs) of Elmer, LA. The Ford was west bound on LA Hwy 488 when Crager attempted to pass another west bound vehicle. As this maneuver was attempted, Crager lost control and exited the left side of the roadway. After exiting the roadway, the vehicle collided with several trees. Crager was wearing his seatbelt and received moderate injuries. He was transported to Cabrini Hospital for treatment. His only passenger, identified as Matthew Gonzales (17 yrs) of Boyce, LA, was not wearing his seatbelt. Gonzales was transported to Cabrini Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Crager was charged with Careless Operation. The crash remains under investigation. Routine toxicology tests are pending. Troop E Troopers have investigated 49 fatal crashes for the year of 2009, resulting in 58 fatalities. Thirty of the 40 fatal crashes (passenger vehicles only) have involved unrestrained motorists/occupants. Four crashes have involved a motorcycle, three have involved a pedestrian, and two have involved an off road vehicle.
