Edmonson, Superintendent News Release Date: September 24, 2009 Rapides Parish Fatal Crash Yesterday afternoon, a crash involving two vehicles claimed one life and injured three. Troopers responded to the crash around 4:00 pm, which occurred on US Hwy 71 south of LA Hwy 3170. The crash involved a 1999 GMC pickup, driven by Christine Johnson (B/F 19 yrs) of Natchitoches, LA and a 1988 Ford Bronco, driven by George E. Winn (B/M 64 yrs) of Bunkie, LA. Both vehicles were north bound on US Hwy 71 traveling in the outside lane when the GMC collided with the Ford. The impact was to the rear of the Ford. This impact caused the Ford to exit the right side of the roadway, which resulted in the vehicle overturning. The GMC also exited the right side of the roadway coming to rest in the ditch. All occupants were transported to local hospitals with minor/moderate injuries initially. At approximately 9:00 pm, Troop E was notified that Winn had died unexpectedly. Johnson received minor injuries and was transported to Rapides General Hospital. Her only passenger, Brandon R. Beverley (19 yrs) of Valdosta, GA, received minor injuries and was transported to Rapides General Hospital. Winn’s only passenger, Patricia A Tanner (51 yrs) of Bunkie, LA, received moderate injuries and was transported to Cabrini Hospital. Johnson was charged with Careless Operation. The crash remains under investigation. Routine toxicology tests are pending. Troop E Troopers have investigated 50 fatal crashes for the year of 2009, resulting in 59 fatalities. Thirty-one of the 41 fatal crashes (passenger vehicles only) have involved unrestrained motorists/occupants. Four crashes have involved a motorcycle, three have involved a pedestrian, and two have involved an off road vehicle.
