Impairment Suspected in Unrestrained Port Barre Man’s Death

Avoyelles Parish – Last night, a crash involving two vehicles killed a man from Port Barre and injured two other adults. The man killed is suspected of being impaired and was not wearing a seat belt. The two adults, that survived the crash, were wearing a seat belt.

Troopers responded to the crash around 8:30 p.m., which occurred on LA Hwy 1, near LA Hwy 1186. The crash involved a 2010 Dodge Charger, driven by William J. Gaspard (W/M 44 yoa) and a 2016 Dodge pickup, driven by Celeste N. Rogers (W/F 43 yoa) of Lettsworth, LA. The Charger was southbound on LA Hwy 1 when Gaspard lost control and crossed the centerline into the opposing lane. This action resulted in the Charger colliding head-on with the northbound pickup.

Gaspard was transported to Avoyelles Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Rogers was transported to Rapides Regional Trauma Center, with moderate injuries. Her only passenger, identified as Tiffany A. Dupont (43 yoa) of Simmesport, received moderate injuries and was transported to Rapides Regional Trauma Center.

Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation.

Louisiana State Police would like to take this opportunity to remind/inform motorists that properly wearing your seat belt will dramatically reduce your chance of being injured or killed in a crash. We ask you to take one second to “buckle up!” Louisiana law requires that every person in a vehicle, regardless of seating position, always remain buckled up. Not wearing a seat belt remains the leading cause of death in motor vehicle crashes.

Motorists must be reminded that alcohol and other drugs have many effects on the body. Alcohol and other drugs can impair visual ability, alter sense of time and space, impair fine motor skills needed to operate a motor vehicle, and decrease reaction times. Just one drink may cause these effects. Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead and designate a sober driver. Not doing so can have deadly consequences.

Louisiana State Police has zero tolerance for impaired drivers. To report aggressive/impaired driving, call *LSP (*577) from your cellular phone or your local law enforcement agency.

Troop E Troopers have investigated nine fatal crashes in 2019, resulting in 11 fatalities.
