TROOP E NEWS RELEASE August 13, 2017 Unrestrained Converse Young Man Killed in Crash Sabine Parish – Early this morning, a single vehicle crash killed a young man from Converse, LA. He was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected during the crash. Troopers responded to the crash around 3:00 a.m., which occurred on LA Hwy 191 near the DeSoto Parish line. The crash involved a 1999 Ford pickup, driven by Robert J. Wates Jr. (W/M 20 yrs). The Ford was southbound on LA Hwy 191 when Wates Jr. lost control and crossed the centerline, in a curve. After losing control, he overcorrected his vehicle and it subsequently began overturning. Wates Jr. was pronounced dead. Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation. Louisiana State Police would like to take this opportunity to remind/inform motorists that properly wearing your seat belt will dramatically reduce your chance of being injured or killed in a crash. We ask you to take one second to “buckle up!” Louisiana law requires that every person in a vehicle, regardless of seating position, always remain buckled up. Not wearing a seat belt remains the leading cause of death in motor vehicle crashes. Troop E Troopers have investigated 27 fatal crashes in 2017, resulting in 33 fatalities.
