TROOP E NEWS RELEASE Unrestrained Addis Man Killed in Crash, Driver Impairment Suspected Avoyelles Parish – Last night, a single vehicle crash killed an unrestrained passenger from Addis, LA. The driver was restrained and suffered moderate injuries, but is suspected of being impaired. Troopers responded to the crash around 10:40 p.m., which occurred on LA Hwy 1, south of LA Hwy 1186. The crash involved a 2012 Chevrolet Malibu, driven by Patrice Deon Butler (B/F 36 yoa) of Addis. The Chevrolet was southbound on LA Hwy 1 when Butler lost control and exited the left side of the roadway. After exiting the roadway, the vehicle traveled down an embankment and collided with a tree. Butler was transported to Rapides Regional Trauma Center for treatment. She has been charged with vehicular homicide, careless operation, and driving left of center. Her only passenger, identified as Orlando Jarmar Johnson (B/M 37 yoa), was pronounced dead at the scene. Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation. Louisiana State Police would like to take this opportunity to remind/inform motorists that properly wearing your seat belt will dramatically reduce your chance of being injured or killed in a crash. We ask you to take one second to “buckle up!” Louisiana law requires that every person in a vehicle, regardless of seating position, always remain buckled up. Not wearing a seat belt remains the leading cause of death in motor vehicle crashes. Motorists must be reminded that alcohol and other drugs have many effects on the body. Alcohol and other drugs can impair visual ability, alter sense of time and space, impair fine motor skills needed to operate a motor vehicle, and decrease reaction times. Just one drink may cause these effects. Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead and designate a sober driver. Not doing so can have deadly consequences. In 2018, Troop E has investigated 42 fatal crashes resulting in 46 deaths. Contact Information: | |||
