TROOP E NEWS RELEASE Unrestrained Florien Man Killed in Multiple Vehicle Crash Sabine Parish – Earlier today, a crash involving three vehicles killed a man from Florien, LA and injured several others. The man killed was not wearing a seat belt. Troopers responded to the crash around 4:40 p.m., which occurred on LA Hwy 6 at LA Hwy 476. The crash involved a 2008 Dodge pickup, driven by Jerry O. Schellenger (W/M 75 yoa) of Huntsville, TX, a 1999 Ford pickup, driven by Marshall Maxie Jr. (B/M 54 yoa) of Florien, and a 1995 GMC pickup, driven by Louis T. Clinkscales (W/M 69 yoa) of Leesville. The Dodge was westbound on LA Hwy 6, traveling directly behind the Ford. As the Ford began to slow down and prepared for a left turn onto LA Hwy 476, the Dodge collided with its rear end. This collision caused the Ford to enter the eastbound lane, which resulted in a second collision between the eastbound GMC and the Ford. Schellenger was wearing his seat belt and sustained minor injuries. He refused medical aid. Maxie Jr. was not wearing a seat belt and sustained moderate injuries. He was transported to LSU Medical Center in Shreveport for treatment. His only passenger, identified as Terrol G. Garner (B/M 53 yoa), was pronounced dead. Clinkscales was wearing his seat belt and sustained moderate injuries. His only passenger, identified as Pauline A. Clinkscales (W/F 69 yoa) of Leesville, was wearing her seat belt and sustained moderate injuries. Both were transported to LSU Medical Center in Shreveport for treatment. Routine toxicology tests and charges are pending. The crash remains under investigation. Louisiana State Police would like to take this opportunity to remind/inform motorists that properly wearing your seat belt will dramatically reduce your chance of being injured or killed in a crash. We ask you to take one second to “buckle up!” Louisiana law requires that every person in a vehicle, regardless of seating position, always remain buckled up. Not wearing a seat belt remains the leading cause of death in motor vehicle crashes. Although the exact cause of the crash remains under investigation, Troopers would like to remind the public of the following: inattentive and distracted driving is dangerous and is a leading cause of crashes in our state. It is important for motorists to pay attention to what is going on outside of the vehicle they are driving. More information on distracted driving may be found online at the federal government’s official distracted driving website, www.distraction.gov. Troop E Troopers have investigated two fatal crashes in 2019, resulting in two fatalities.
