TROOP E NEWS RELEASE April 1, 2018 Unrestrained Ferriday Woman Killed in Crash Concordia Parish – Earlier today, a crash involving two vehicles killed a woman from Ferriday, LA and injured a man from Monterey, LA. The man was wearing his seat belt, but the deceased woman was not wearing a seat belt. Troopers responded to the crash around 3:55 p.m., which occurred on LA Hwy 568 east of LA Hwy 900. The crash involved a 2015 Dodge Journey, driven by Michael W. Higgins (W/M 28 yrs) and a 2012 Chevrolet Impala, driven by Betty Johnson (B/F 72 yrs). The Dodge was eastbound on LA Hwy 568, when Higgins lost control and crossed the centerline into the westbound lane. This action resulted in the Dodge colliding head-on with the westbound Chevrolet. Higgins received moderate injuries and was transported to Rapides Regional Trauma Center. Johnson was pronounced dead. Routine toxicology tests and charges are pending. The crash remains under investigation. Louisiana State Police would like to take this opportunity to remind/inform motorists that properly wearing your seat belt will dramatically reduce your chance of being injured or killed in a crash. We ask you to take one second to “buckle up!” Louisiana law requires that every person in a vehicle, regardless of seating position, always remain buckled up. Not wearing a seat belt remains the leading cause of death in motor vehicle crashes. Troop E Troopers have investigated eight fatal crashes in 2018, resulting in eight fatalities.
