TROOP E NEWS RELEASE
April 29, 2018
Unrestrained Deville Teen Killed in Crash

Grant Parish Early this morning, a single vehicle crash killed a teenager from Deville, LA. He was not wearing his seat belt, but his passenger was wearing a seat belt and received minor injuries.

Troopers responded to the crash around 4:05 a.m., which occurred on LA Hwy 8, near LA Hwy 492. The crash involved a 2000 Nissan pickup, driven by Benjamin A. Williford (W/M 18 yrs). The Nissan was westbound on LA Hwy 8 when Williford lost control and exited the right side of the roadway before overcorrecting and exiting the left side. After exiting the left side of the roadway, the vehicle collided with several small trees and overturned.

Williford was pronounced dead. His only passenger, identified as Timothy S. Darnell (W/M 20 yrs) of Pineville, LA, was transported to Rapides Regional Trauma Center for treatment.

Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation.

Louisiana State Police would like to take this opportunity to remind/inform motorists that properly wearing your seat belt will dramatically reduce your chance of being injured or killed in a crash. We ask you to take one second to “buckle up!” Louisiana law requires that every person in a vehicle, regardless of seating position, always remain buckled up. Not wearing a seat belt remains the leading cause of death in motor vehicle crashes.

In 2018, Troop E has investigated 12 fatal crashes resulting in 12 deaths.
