Leesville Bicyclist Killed in Hit and Run Crash

Rapides Parish – Earlier today, a crash involving a bicycle killed a man from Leesville, LA.

Troopers responded to the crash around 8:30 a.m., which occurred on LA Hwy 28 West, at the Rapides/Vernon Parish line. The crash involved a 2000 Freightliner (18 wheeler – empty log truck), driven by Barney L. Adams (W/M 57 yrs) of Harrisonburg, LA and a bicycle, ridden by David Guerrero (O/M 72 yrs). The Freightliner was eastbound on LA Hwy 28 when Adams lost control and traveled onto the eastbound shoulder. This action resulted in the Freightliner colliding with the bicycle. Guerrero was riding his bicycle on the eastbound shoulder traveling east, when the collision occurred.

Adams did not stop at the scene and continued east. Troopers located Adams and his vehicle several miles from the crash location. He was wearing his seat belt and was not injured. Adams was arrested and charged with hit and run involving a fatal injury, negligent homicide, careless operation and was booked into the Rapides Parish Jail.

Guerrero was transported to Rapides Regional Trauma Center where he was later pronounced dead. He was wearing a lime green high visibility shirt and a bicycle helmet at the time of the crash.

Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation.

Motorists should remain alert at all times and remember the three foot rule, when passing bicycles. Making good choices, while in motor vehicles, such as never driving while impaired, always ensuring every occupant is properly restrained, and avoiding all distractions can often mean the difference between life and death.

In 2018, Troop E has investigated 32 fatal crashes resulting in 34 deaths.
