A Police Officer and a Montgomery Resident Killed in Crash, Both Unrestrained

Montgomery – Earlier this evening, a crash involving two vehicles killed a Montgomery police officer and another man from Montgomery, LA. Both men were not wearing a seat belt when the crash occurred.

Troopers responded to the crash around 6:30 p.m., which occurred on US Hwy 71, in Montgomery. The crash involved a 2006 Ford Crown Victoria (police vehicle), driven by Kirt R. Ricks III (W/M 24 yrs) of Winnfield, LA and a 2006 Ford pickup, driven by Gary W. Pinder (W/M 65 yrs). The police vehicle was northbound on US Hwy 71 when Ricks III lost control and exited the right side of the roadway. After exiting the roadway, Ricks III overcorrected his vehicle, reentered US Hwy 71, and traveled into the southbound lane. This action resulted in the police vehicle colliding with the southbound Ford pickup.

Ricks III and Pinder were pronounced dead at the scene. Pinder’s only passenger, identified as Robert L. Carter (W/M 58 yrs) of Montgomery, was not wearing his seat belt and sustained minor injuries. He was transported to Rapides Regional Trauma Center for treatment.

Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation.

Louisiana State Police would like to take this opportunity to remind/inform motorists that properly wearing your seat belt will dramatically reduce your chance of being injured or killed in a crash. We ask you to take one second to “buckle up!” Louisiana law requires that every person in a vehicle, regardless of seating position, always remain buckled up. Not wearing a seat belt remains the leading cause of death in motor vehicle crashes.

In 2018, Troop E has investigated 33 fatal crashes resulting in 36 deaths.
