TROOP E NEWS RELEASE July 23, 2018 Two Zwolle Men Killed in High Speed Crash Sabine Parish – Yesterday evening, a single vehicle crash killed two men from Zwolle, LA. Both men were wearing a seat belt, but excessive speed is considered a factor. Troopers responded to the crash around 6:40 p.m., which occurred on LA Hwy 191, near LA Hwy 482. The crash involved a 2003 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, driven by Gary L. Carheel (B/M 64 yrs). The Chevrolet was southbound on LA Hwy 191, at a high rate of speed, when Carheel lost control and exited the left side of the roadway. After exiting the roadway, the vehicle collided with a tree. Carheel was pronounced dead. His only passenger, identified as Herman D. Green (B/M 41 yrs), was pronounced dead. Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation. Speeding reduces a driver’s ability to steer safely around curves or objects in the roadway, extends the distance necessary to stop a vehicle, and increases the distance a vehicle travels while the driver reacts to a situation. Speeding and other aggressive driving behaviors are among the leading causes of highway crashes and fatalities. In 2018, Troop E has investigated 27 fatal crashes resulting in 27 deaths. | |||
