Alabama Fugitive Apprehended in Louisiana after High Speed Pursuit

LaSalle Parish – A suspect that is accused of shooting a police officer and carjacking in Montgomery, Alabama, has been apprehended by law enforcement in Louisiana. The suspect, identified as Matthew Wright (B/M 30 yrs), was shoplifting from a major department store in Montgomery, AL when a Montgomery Police Officer attempted to arrest him. Wright then shot the police officer and fled the scene, after carjacking a customer in the parking lot.

Today, at approximately 3:50 p.m. a Louisiana State Police (LSP) Trooper from Troop E began assisting a Ferriday police officer with a pursuit involving a 2008 Chrysler 300. The Ferriday police officer was attempting to stop the Chrysler because Wright was believed to be the driver. Wright was wanted out of Montgomery for the attempted murder of a police officer and for carjacking.

The pursuit began in Ferriday and traveled west on US Hwy 84, reaching speeds of 120 mph. Wright was operating the vehicle in a reckless manner, passing vehicles on the shoulder and causing vehicles to leave the roadway. The pursuit continued into LaSalle Parish with LSP, Ferriday Police Department, Jonesville Police Department, and Catahoula Sheriff’s Office giving chase. Once the pursuit entered LaSalle Parish, the LaSalle Sheriff’s Office began assisting.

The pursuit continued on US Hwy 84, at which time Wright crashed the Chrysler. After crashing the Chrysler, he was able to carjack the driver of a Nissan Altima at gun point. The driver of the Nissan Altima was not harmed. Shortly thereafter, Wright abandoned the Nissan and fled into the woods on foot.

LSP Air Support responded to the scene, as did LaSalle Parish Sheriff’s Office K-9s. At approximately 5:22 p.m., Wright was located, arrested, and taken into custody.

Due to events that transpired during the pursuit and manhunt, Wright was shot by law enforcement. Wright was shot in the abdomen area and was transported to LaSalle General Hospital. He has been released from the hospital and has been transported to the LaSalle Parish Detention Center.

The investigation is very complex with several different crime scenes. Law enforcement is working diligently to gather and process evidence. Charges are pending. An update will follow when more information is available.
