TROOP E NEWS RELEASE October 10, 2014 Unrestrained Florida Man Killed in Crash Natchitoches Parish – Last night, a crash involving a single vehicle killed a man from Margate, FL and injured another from Charlotte, NC. The man killed was ejected during the crash and was not wearing his seat belt. Troopers responded to the crash around 7:00 p.m., which occurred on Interstate 49 north of LA Hwy 485. The crash involved a 2002 Ford Ranger, driven by James Joseph Klinger (W/M 55 yrs). The Ford was northbound on Interstate 49 when one of the tires experienced a failure. After this occurred, Klinger lost control and exited the right side of the roadway before the vehicle began overturning. Klinger was transported to Natchitoches Hospital where he was later pronounced dead. His only passenger, identified as David G. Cook (W/M 52 yrs), received moderate injuries and was transported to LSU Medical Center in Shreveport. It is unknown if he was wearing his seat belt. Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation. If you experience a tire failure (blowout) while driving don’t apply the brakes initially. After you have regained control of your vehicle then apply the brakes softly. Concentrate on steering, allow the car to slow down gradually, and then steer the vehicle off the road. The type of vehicle you are driving will play a major role in your ability to maintain control. If you are mentally prepared for an emergency, chances are you will respond appropriately. Louisiana State Police would like to take this opportunity to remind/inform motorists that properly wearing your seatbelt will dramatically reduce your chance of being injured or killed in a crash. We ask you to take one second to “buckle up!” Troop E Troopers have investigated 36 fatal crashes in 2014, resulting in 42 fatalities.
