TROOP E NEWS RELEASE October 18, 2014 Unrestrained Juvenile Killed in Double Fatality Natchitoches Parish – Late yesterday afternoon, a single vehicle crash initially caused serious injuries to two and moderately injured two others. The juvenile was not wearing her seat belt and was ejected during the crash. Troopers responded to the crash around 5:50 p.m., which occurred on Interstate 49 south of LA Hwy 119. The crash involved a 2003 Ford Explorer, driven by Carl J. Bergeron (W/M 38 yrs) of Opelousas, LA. The Ford was northbound on Interstate 49 when one of the tires experienced a failure. After this occurred, Bergeron lost control which caused the vehicle to exit the left side of the roadway into the median. Once the Ford entered the median, it began overturning before entering the southbound lanes of Interstate 49 and coming to rest on the shoulder. Bergeron was transported to Rapides Regional Trauma Center where he was pronounced dead around 1:30 p.m. today. Juanita Fontenot (W/F 57 yrs), Jackie M. Bergeron (W/F 39 yrs), and Hailey Castille (W/F 13 yrs), all from Opelousas, LA, were passengers in Bergeron’s vehicle. Fontenot was wearing her seat belt and received moderate injuries. She was transported to LSU Medical Center in Shreveport for treatment. Jackie Bergeron was wearing her seat belt and received moderate injuries. She was transported to Rapides Regional Trauma Center for treatment. Castille was transported to Rapides Regional Trauma Center where she was pronounced dead around 12:35 p.m. today. Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation. If you experience a tire failure (blowout) while driving don’t apply the brakes initially. After you have regained control of your vehicle then apply the brakes softly. Concentrate on steering, allow the car to slow down gradually, and then steer the vehicle off the road. The type of vehicle you are driving will play a major role in your ability to maintain control. If you are mentally prepared for an emergency, chances are you will respond appropriately. Louisiana State Police would like to take this opportunity to remind/inform motorists that properly wearing your seat belt will dramatically reduce your chance of being injured or killed in a crash. We ask you to take one second to “buckle up!” Troop E Troopers have investigated 37 fatal crashes in 2014, resulting in 44 fatalities.
