TROOP E NEWS RELEASE September 28, 2014 Two Killed in Fiery Crash Vernon Parish – Early this morning, two people were killed in a single vehicle crash. The driver has been identified and Fort Polk authorities are currently making arrangements to notify next of kin. The passenger has not been identified, at this time, due to the severity of injuries/burns. Authorities are working diligently and an update will follow as soon as more information becomes available. Troopers responded to the crash around 2:40 a.m., which occurred on W. Hawthorne near US Hwy 171. The crash involved a 2010 Subaru, driven by a 21 year old (W/M) of Fort Polk, LA. The Subaru was eastbound on W. Hawthorne when the driver lost control and exited the right side of the roadway. After exiting the roadway, the vehicle collided with a tree before becoming fully engulfed in flames. Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation. Although the exact cause of the crash has not been determined, Troopers would like to remind motorists to not drive distracted, properly wear your seat belt, and never drive impaired. Troop E Troopers have investigated 33 fatal crashes in 2014, resulting in 39 fatalities.
