TROOP E NEWS RELEASE

July 21, 2014
Husband and Wife Killed in Crash

LaSalle Parish – Earlier this afternoon, a crash involving two vehicles killed a woman and a man from Columbia, LA. A woman and a child, in a separate vehicle, were moderately/severely injured.

Troopers responded to the crash around 12:45 p.m., which occurred on LA Hwy 28 East near US Hwy 84. The crash involved a 1995 Ford pickup, driven by Margie W. Moore (B/F 72 yrs) and a 2010 Cadillac DTS, driven by Judith Hewitt (W/F 68 yrs) of Ferriday, LA. The Ford was westbound on LA Hwy 28 East when Moore initially failed to observe that westbound traffic was slowing. In an apparent effort to avoid a rear end collision, Moore swerved left and crossed the centerline into the eastbound lane. This action resulted in the westbound Ford colliding with the eastbound Cadillac.

Moore was wearing her seatbelt, but was pronounced dead. Her only passenger, identified as Bluith Moore (B/M 83 yrs), was wearing his seatbelt and was pronounced dead.

Hewitt was wearing her seatbelt and received moderate/severe injuries. She was transported to Rapides Regional Trauma Center for treatment. Her only passenger, identified as a juvenile (W/F 8 yrs) of Ferriday, received moderate/severe injuries and was transported to Rapides Regional Trauma Center.

Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation.

While not all crashes are survivable, seatbelts can greatly decrease the occupant’s chance of death and will greatly reduce the extent of injury.

Inattentive and distracted driving is dangerous and is a leading cause of crashes in our state. It is important for motorists to pay attention to what is going on outside of the vehicle they are driving. More information on distracted driving may be found online at the federal government’s official distracted driving website, www.distraction.gov.

Troop E Troopers have investigated 26 fatal crashes in 2014, resulting in 30 fatalities.
