TROOP E NEWS RELEASE

March 22, 2015
Florien Teen Killed in Crash

Sabine Parish – Late last night, a crash involving two vehicles killed a teenager from Florien, LA and injured another teenager from Many, LA.

Troopers responded to the crash around 11:40 p.m., which occurred on LA Hwy 118 near the Sabine/Natchitoches Parish line. The crash involved a 2010 GMC pickup, driven by Kelby D. Pilcher (W/M 16 yrs) and a 2008 Chevrolet pickup, driven by Michael S. Fair (W/M 18 yrs). The GMC was eastbound on LA Hwy 118 when Pilcher lost control and crossed the centerline into the westbound lane. This action resulted in the GMC colliding with the westbound Chevrolet.

Pilcher was wearing his seat belt, but was pronounced dead at the scene.

Fair was wearing his seat belt. He received moderate injuries and was transported to Sabine Medical Center.

Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation.

While not all crashes are survivable, seat belts can greatly decrease the occupant’s chance of death and will greatly reduce the extent of injury.

Although the exact cause of the crash remains under investigation, Troopers would like to remind the public of the following: inattentive and distracted driving is dangerous and is a leading cause of crashes in our state. It is important for motorists to pay attention to what is going on outside of the vehicle they are driving. More information on distracted driving may be found online at the federal government’s official distracted driving website, www.distraction.gov.

Troop E Troopers have investigated seven fatal crashes in 2015, resulting in eleven fatalities.
