TROOP E NEWS RELEASE April 15, 2015 Juvenile among Two Killed in Crash Concordia Parish – Late last night, a single vehicle crash killed a man and a juvenile from Jonesville, LA and injured another small child. None of the occupants were properly restrained during the crash and excessive speed is a suspected factor. Troopers responded to the crash around 10:23 p.m., which occurred on LA Hwy 565 south of US Hwy 84. The crash involved a 2001 GMC Sonoma, driven by Zachery D. Giles (W/M 28 yrs). The GMC was northbound on LA Hwy 565 when Giles lost control and exited the right side of the roadway. After exiting the roadway, the vehicle collided with a tree. Giles and one of his juvenile passengers, identified as Autumn Giles (W/F 9 yrs), were pronounced dead at the scene. An additional juvenile (W/M 4 yrs) of Jonesville, received moderate injuries and was transported to Riverland Medical Center. Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation. Louisiana State Police would like to take this opportunity to remind/inform motorists that properly wearing your seat belt and properly restraining your children in car seats will dramatically reduce your chance of being injured or killed in a crash. We ask you to take one second to “buckle up!” Louisiana law requires that every person in a vehicle, regardless of seating position, always remain buckled up. Not wearing a seat belt remains the leading cause of death in motor vehicle crashes. Speeding reduces a driver’s ability to steer safely around curves or objects in the roadway, extends the distance necessary to stop a vehicle, and increases the distance a vehicle travels while the driver reacts to a situation. Speeding and other aggressive driving behaviors are among the leading causes of highway crashes and fatalities. Although the exact cause of the crash remains under investigation, Troopers would like to remind the public of the following: inattentive and distracted driving is dangerous and is a leading cause of crashes in our state. It is important for motorists to pay attention to what is going on outside of the vehicle they are driving. More information on distracted driving may be found online at the federal government’s official distracted driving website, www.distraction.gov. Troop E Troopers have investigated eleven fatal crashes in 2015, resulting in sixteen fatalities.
