TROOP E NEWS RELEASE October 10, 2013 Husband and Wife Killed in Concordia Parish Crash Concordia Parish – Last night, a crash involving three vehicles killed an elderly married couple from Ferriday, LA. Troopers responded to the crash around 8:40 p.m., which occurred on US Hwy 84 at Ferriday Drive. The crash involved a 2006 Chevrolet pickup, driven by Carolyn F. Smith (W/F 77 yrs) of Ferriday, a 1996 Chevrolet Impala, driven by Clifford E. Payne Jr. (B/M 43 yrs) of Vidalia, LA, and a 1988 Lincoln Mark VII, driven by Robert Perry (B/M 25 yrs) of Ridgecrest, LA. The Chevrolet pickup was northbound on Ferriday Drive when Smith failed to yield when entering US Hwy 84. This action resulted in the eastbound Impala and the eastbound Lincoln colliding with it. It is unknown if Smith was wearing her seatbelt. She was pronounced dead. Her only passenger (husband), identified as Welton Smith Jr. (W/M 80 yrs), was pronounced dead. It is unknown if he was wearing his seatbelt. Payne Jr. was not wearing his seatbelt and received moderate injuries. He was transported to Riverland Medical Center for treatment. Perry was not wearing his seatbelt and received moderate injuries. He was transported to Natchez Regional Medical Center for treatment. His only passenger, identified as Galen L. Jefferson (B/M 31 yrs) of Ferriday, was not wearing his seatbelt and received moderate injuries. He was transported to Natchez Regional Medical Center for treatment. Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation. While not all crashes are survivable, seatbelts can greatly decrease the occupant’s chance of death and will greatly reduce the extent of injury. Troop E Troopers have investigated 36 fatal crashes in 2013, resulting in 38 fatalities.
