TROOP E NEWS RELEASE October 30, 2013 Alcohol Suspected in Natchitoches Parish Fatal Crash Natchitoches Parish - Early this morning, a single vehicle crash killed a woman from Natchitoches, LA. The driver is suspected of being impaired and she was not wearing her seatbelt. Troopers responded to the crash around 12:40 a.m., which occurred on LA Hwy 480 near Hart Road. The crash involved a 2001 Ford pickup, driven by Sandra L. Ponthieux (W/F 50 yrs). The Ford was westbound on LA Hwy 480 when Ponthieux lost control and exited the right side of the roadway. After exiting the roadway, she reentered LA Hwy 480 and overcorrected her vehicle. This action caused the Ford to once again exit the right side of the roadway before colliding with a tree. Ponthieux was pronounced dead. Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation. Motorists must be reminded that alcohol has many effects on the body. Alcohol can impair visual ability, alter sense of time and space, impair fine motor skills needed to operate a motor vehicle, and decrease reaction times. Just one drink may cause these effects. Louisiana State Police would like to take this opportunity to remind/inform motorists that properly wearing your seatbelt will dramatically reduce your chance of being injured or killed in a crash. We ask you to take one second to “buckle up!” Troop E Troopers have investigated 38 fatal crashes in 2013, resulting in 40 fatalities.
