TROOP E NEWS RELEASE November 3, 2013 Motorcyclist Killed In Natchitoches Parish Crash Natchitoches Parish – Late last night, a single vehicle crash involving a motorcycle killed a man from Robeline, LA. Troopers responded to the crash around 11:30 p.m., which occurred on LA Hwy 120 near Flora/Cypress. The crash involved a 2014 Harley Davidson motorcycle, driven by Cain J. Brian (W/M 31 yrs). The Harley was westbound on LA Hwy 120, at a high rate of speed, when Brian lost control and exited the left side of the roadway. After exiting the roadway, the motorcycle traveled down an embankment before colliding with a parked vehicle. Brian was wearing a helmet, but was ejected and pronounced dead. Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation. Speeding is one of the most prevalent factors contributing to traffic crashes (NHTSA). Motor vehicle traffic crashes are complex events that are a culmination of various driver, vehicle or environment-related factors. Driver-related factors that contribute to motor vehicle traffic crashes are mostly behavioral in nature. These include impaired driving, aggressive driving (including speeding), and distracted driving. Speeding reduces a driver’s ability to steer safely around curves or objects in the roadway, extends the distance necessary to stop a vehicle, and increases the distance a vehicle travels while the driver reacts to a dangerous situation. Motorcyclists must wear a proper US D.O.T. helmet when operating their motorcycle on Louisiana roadways. Although not all crashes are survivable, properly utilizing safety equipment like approved motorcycle helmets and seatbelts decrease your risk of serious injury or death. Motorcycle awareness license plates are available through the Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles. Please visit their website at www.expresslane.org for more information. Funds generated from the purchase of the plates will be used by the Motorcycle Awareness Campaign to increase awareness and promote/support training and education efforts for motorcyclists. Troop E Troopers have investigated 39 fatal crashes in 2013, resulting in 41 fatalities.
