TROOP E NEWS RELEASE December 1, 2013 Motorcyclist Killed While Wearing a Novelty Helmet Vernon Parish – Late yesterday afternoon, a crash involving a motorcycle killed a man from Dayton, TX. He was wearing a novelty helmet, not an approved US D.O.T. helmet. Troopers responded to the crash around 4:50 p.m., which occurred on Cooper Church Road in Vernon Parish. The crash involved a 2002 Kawasaki motorcycle, driven by Steve E. Jarrell (W/M 62 yrs). The Kawasaki was westbound on Cooper Church Road when Jarrell lost control and exited the right side of the roadway. After exiting the right side, the motorcycle reentered the roadway before overturning and exiting the left side. Jarrell was transported to Rapides Regional Trauma Center with serious injuries, but was later pronounced dead. Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation. Motorcyclists must wear a proper US D.O.T. helmet when operating their motorcycle on Louisiana roadways. Although not all crashes are survivable, properly utilizing safety equipment like approved motorcycle helmets and seatbelts decrease your risk of serious injury or death. Motorcycle awareness license plates are available through the Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles. Please visit their website at www.expresslane.org for more information. Funds generated from the purchase of the plates will be used by the Motorcycle Awareness Campaign to increase awareness and promote/support training and education efforts for motorcyclists. Troop E Troopers have investigated 46 fatal crashes in 2013, resulting in 48 fatalities.
