TROOP E NEWS RELEASE

October 9, 2013
Boyce Man Charged with Vehicular Homicide

Rapides Parish – Last night, a crash involving two vehicles killed a woman from Sieper, LA and injured two other occupants. One of the drivers involved is suspected of being impaired.

Troopers responded to the crash around 8:15 p.m., which occurred on Rapides Station Road at Old Boyce Road, in Rapides Parish. The crash involved a 2006 Peterbilt (18 wheeler), driven by Edgar Gonzalez (O/M 41 yrs) of Alexandria, LA and a 2001 Dodge pickup, driven by Dusty Smith (W/M 34 yrs) of Boyce, LA. The Peterbilt was westbound on Rapides Station Road when Gonzalez attempted a U-turn maneuver, at which time his vehicle stalled. Gonzalez exited his vehicle and was standing near it when the eastbound Dodge collided with the trailer of the Peterbilt.

Gonzalez was not injured. He was charged with parking in the roadway and having an expired license plate.

Smith was not wearing his seatbelt and received minor injuries. He was transported to Rapides Regional Trauma Center. His only two passengers, identified as Danielle Stricklin (W/F 28 yrs) of Sieper, LA and Marcus Gray (B/M 31 yrs) of Colfax, LA, were not wearing their seatbelts. Gray received moderate injuries and was transported to Rapides Regional Trauma Center. Stricklin was pronounced dead. Smith was charged with vehicular homicide, DWI 3rd, driving under suspension, careless operation, and no seatbelt.

Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation.

Motorists must be reminded that alcohol has many effects on the body. Alcohol can impair visual ability, alter sense of time and space, impair fine motor skills needed to operate a motor vehicle, and decrease reaction times. Just one drink may cause these effects.

Louisiana State Police would like to take this opportunity to remind/inform motorists that properly wearing your seatbelt will dramatically reduce your chance of being injured or killed in a crash. We ask you to take one second to “buckle up!”

Troop E Troopers have investigated 35 fatal crashes in 2013, resulting in 36 fatalities.
