TROOP E NEWS RELEASE August 5, 2013 Child Killed On ATV In Natchitoches Parish Natchitoches Parish – Earlier today, a child operating an ATV and not wearing a helmet was killed. Troopers responded to the crash around 3:35 p.m., which occurred on Holman Loop Road near US Hwy 71. The crash involved a 2013 Honda Rancher (ATV), driven by Hunter R. Cason (W/M 12 yrs) of Campti, LA. The ATV was eastbound on Holman Loop Road when Cason lost control and exited the right side of the roadway. After exiting the roadway, the ATV began overturning and collided with two trees. Cason was ejected from the ATV and was pronounced dead. Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation. The public is reminded that it is dangerous and illegal to operate off-road vehicles (i.e. three-wheelers, four-wheelers, and other all-terrain vehicles) on any public roadway in this state. The ATV industry has recommendations for the age of the rider and the size of ATV. It is recommended that youth 6 and older ride an ATV with an engine size less than 70 cubic centimeters. Youth 12 and older should only ride an ATV with an engine size of 90 cubic centimeters or less. Only youth aged 16 years or older should be allowed to ride an ATV with an engine size greater than 90 cubic centimeters. Troop E Troopers have investigated 26 fatal crashes in 2013, resulting in 27 fatalities.
