TROOP E NEWS RELEASE

September 2, 2013
Alcohol And Lack Of Seatbelt Usage Factors In Deadly Crash

Sabine Parish – Late last night, a single vehicle crash killed an unrestrained young man from Many, LA. The driver of the vehicle is suspected of being impaired.

Troopers responded to the crash around 11:40 p.m., which occurred on Plainview Road near US Hwy 171. The crash involved a 2006 Dodge pickup, driven by Christopher A. Neal (W/M 20 yrs) of Florien, LA. The Dodge was westbound on Plainview Road when Neal lost control and exited the left side of the roadway. After exiting the roadway, the vehicle began overturning and came to rest against two trees.

Neal was not wearing his seatbelt, but only sustained minor injuries and was transported to Sabine Medical Center. His two passengers, identified as Zachary S. Rhame (W/M 20 yrs) and a juvenile (W/F 16 yrs) of Zwolle, LA, were both unrestrained and ejected during the crash. The juvenile received moderate injuries and was transported to Sabine Medical Center. Rhame was pronounced dead.

Neal was charged with vehicular homicide, contributing to the delinquency of juveniles, careless operation, and no seatbelt.

Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation.

Motorists must be reminded that alcohol has many effects on the body. Alcohol can impair visual ability, alter sense of time and space, impair fine motor skills needed to operate a motor vehicle, and decrease reaction times. Just one drink may cause these effects.

Louisiana State Police would like to take this opportunity to remind/inform motorists that properly wearing your seatbelt will dramatically reduce your chance of being injured or killed in a crash. We ask you to take one second to “buckle up!”

Troop E Troopers have investigated 31 fatal crashes in 2013, resulting in 32 fatalities.
