TROOP E NEWS RELEASE September 26, 2013 Cottonport Man Killed in Rapides Parish Crash Rapides Parish – Late this afternoon, a crash involving two vehicles killed a man from Cottonport, LA and injured another from Corona, CA. Troopers responded to the crash around 5:05 p.m., which occurred on US Hwy 71 south of US Hwy 167. The crash involved a 2000 Dodge, driven by Jonathan E. Nichols (W/M 47 yrs) and a 2014 Chevrolet pickup, driven by Ricky Meyer (W/M 48 yrs). The Dodge was southbound on US Hwy 71 when Nichols lost control and crossed the centerline. This action resulted in the Dodge colliding with the northbound Chevrolet. Nichols was wearing his seatbelt, but was pronounced dead. Meyer was wearing his seatbelt and received moderate injuries. He was transported to Rapides Regional Trauma Center. Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation. While not all crashes are survivable, seatbelts can greatly decrease the occupant’s chance of death and will greatly reduce the extent of injury. Troop E Troopers have investigated 34 fatal crashes in 2013, resulting in 35 fatalities.
