TROOP E NEWS RELEASE

May 1, 2014
Unrestrained Campti Woman Killed in Crash

Natchitoches Parish – Early this morning, a crash involving two vehicles killed a woman from Campti, LA. It was determined she was not wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash.

Troopers responded to the crash around 5:40 a.m., which occurred on US Hwy 71 north of LA Hwy 486. The crash involved a 2006 GMC pickup, driven by Mitzi A. Scott (W/F 54 yrs) and a 2013 Peterbilt, driven by Roger L. Cooper (W/M 52 yrs) of Coushatta, LA. Prior to the crash, Scott had stopped her GMC in the southbound lane of US Hwy 71 and was facing north. She was stopped due to a tree that had fallen across the southbound lane and had activated her emergency flashers in an effort to warn other motorists. The Peterbilt was southbound on US Hwy 71 and as Cooper topped the crest of a hill was unable to avoid colliding with the tree despite his efforts. After colliding with the tree, the Peterbilt continued south and collided with the GMC.

Scott was pronounced dead.

Cooper was wearing his seatbelt and was not injured.

Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation.

Louisiana State Police would like to take this opportunity to remind/inform motorists that properly wearing your seatbelt will dramatically reduce your chance of being injured or killed in a crash. We ask you to take one second to “buckle up!”

Troop E Troopers have investigated 19 fatal crashes in 2014, resulting in 21 fatalities.
