See below for the original news release. Rapides Parish – Earlier today, a crash involving two vehicles killed a man from Pineville, LA. Preliminary evidence indicates that he was wearing his seatbelt, but was still ejected due to extensive damage to the vehicle. Troopers responded to the crash around 10:30 a.m., which occurred on LA Hwy 496 west of LA Hwy 3054. The crash involved a 2002 Ford F-250, driven by Daniel Verzwyvelt II (W/M 30 yrs) of Boyce, LA and a 1999 Toyota pickup, driven by Robert David Fowler (W/M 50 yrs). The Ford was westbound on LA Hwy 496 when Verzwyvelt II lost control and crossed the centerline. This action resulted in the Ford colliding with the eastbound Toyota. It is unknown if Verzwyvelt II was wearing his seatbelt. He received moderate injuries and was transported to Rapides Regional Trauma Center. Fowler was pronounced dead. Routine toxicology tests and charges are pending. The crash remains under investigation. While not all crashes are survivable, seatbelts can greatly decrease the occupant’s chance of death and will greatly reduce the extent of injury. Troop E Troopers have investigated 16 fatal crashes in 2014, resulting in 18 fatalities.
