TROOP E NEWS RELEASE January 2, 2014 Two Unrestrained Men Killed in Avoyelles Parish Crash Avoyelles Parish – Late last night, a single vehicle crash killed two men from Bunkie, LA and moderately injured a woman. Both men were not wearing a seatbelt and were ejected during the crash. The woman was wearing a seatbelt. Troopers responded to the crash around 10:15 p.m., which occurred on LA Hwy 29 south of Bunkie. The crash involved a 2002 Dodge pickup, driven by Marvin B. Overbey (W/M 42 yrs). The Dodge was southbound on LA Hwy 29 when Overbey lost control and exited the right side of the roadway. After exiting the roadway, the vehicle collided with a utility pole and began overturning. Overbey was pronounced dead. He had two passengers in his vehicle, at the time of the crash, identified as Vickie M. Kelone (W/F 55 yrs) of Bunkie and Gary W. Ogea (W/M 50 yrs). Kelone was transported to Bunkie General Hospital for treatment. Ogea was pronounced dead. Alcohol usage is a suspected factor. Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation. Motorists must be reminded that alcohol has many effects on the body. Alcohol can impair visual ability, alter sense of time and space, impair fine motor skills needed to operate a motor vehicle, and decrease reaction times. Just one drink may cause these effects. Louisiana State Police would like to take this opportunity to remind/inform motorists that properly wearing your seatbelt will dramatically reduce your chance of being injured or killed in a crash. We ask you to take one second to “buckle up!” Troop E Troopers have investigated 1 fatal crash in 2014, resulting in 2 fatalities.
