TROOP E NEWS RELEASE

February 23, 2014
Unrestrained Dry Prong Man Killed in Crash

Grant Parish – Early this morning, a single vehicle crash killed a young man from Dry Prong, LA and injured several others. He was not wearing his seatbelt and was ejected during the crash. Alcohol usage is a suspected factor.

Troopers responded to the crash around 3:30 a.m., which occurred on Race Track Road near US Hwy 167. The crash involved a 2009 GMC pickup, driven by Chad G. Chandler (W/M 21 yrs). The GMC was southbound on Race Track Road when Chandler lost control and exited the right side of the roadway. After exiting the roadway, the vehicle collided with an embankment before overturning.

Chandler was pronounced dead. His passengers are identified as a juvenile (W/F 16 yrs) of Colfax, LA, Gray Channing (W/M 20 yrs) of Bentley, LA, Averi Leger (W/F 19 yrs) of Natchitoches, LA, and Kelsey L. Routh (W/F 20 yrs) of Pineville, LA. None of the passengers were wearing a seatbelt, all received moderate injuries, and were transported to Rapides Regional Trauma Center. Channing and Leger were also ejected.

Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation.

Motorists must be reminded that alcohol has many effects on the body. Alcohol can impair visual ability, alter sense of time and space, impair fine motor skills needed to operate a motor vehicle, and decrease reaction times. Just one drink may cause these effects.

Louisiana State Police would like to take this opportunity to remind/inform motorists that properly wearing your seatbelt will dramatically reduce your chance of being injured or killed in a crash. We ask you to take one second to “buckle up!”

Troop E Troopers have investigated 9 fatal crashes in 2014, resulting in 11 fatalities.
